Willard Humphries

November 8, 1948 — January 6, 2024

Willard Humphries, age 75, of Leesburg, Georgia, passed away on January 6, 2023. He was born November 8, 1948 in Pelham, Georgia to Mercer and Hazel Humphries.

Willard Humphries was a devout follower of Jesus Christ. He would always encourage those around him to trust in the Lord. He married Brenda Penny Humphries on July 12, 1969. She was the love of his life and the sparkle in his eye. They built a life and family together, in which they raised two beautiful daughters and were instrumental in the lives of their four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Willard Humphries was known to share stories of a good fishing hole, a great western he had watched on tv, and a song he had learned to play on the guitar. If you stopped by the Humphries’ residence on a Saturday afternoon in the fall, Willard would be passionately cheering on the Georgia Bulldogs. Willard loved nothing more than to host his family at his home for supper and good conversation.

Willard Humphries will be remembered as someone who found true joy in being a family-man, a devout husband to his wife of 54 years, and a follower of Jesus Christ. He proudly served as a deputy sheriff for Dougherty County and Worth County.

He was preceded in death by Mercer Humphries (Father), Hazel Humphries (Mother), Mercer Allen Humphries (Brother), Morris Wayne Adams (brother-in-law), Michael Scott Cothren (son-in-law), and James Floyd Fields Jr (son-in-law).

Willard is survived by his loving wife Brenda Penny Humphries, his daughters Shannen Fields-Braswell (Anthony Braswell) and Melanie Cothren, his sister Melba Adams, his grandchildren James Floyd Fields III (Addison Fields), Mallory McManus (Joel McManus), Mills Cothren, and Marlee Cothren, his great-grandchild Payne Houston Fields, and his beloved dog Cody Ray Humphries.

The family will receive guests from 1:00 - 2:00 pm, Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at Joseph W. Jones Funeral Home in Leesburg, Georgia. A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 pm following the visitation. The celebration will be officiated by Anthony Braswell. He will be laid to rest in the family plot at Mizpah Cemetery in Grady County.
