Mr. John Henry Daniels, 95, of Albany, peacefully passed away surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, January 7, 2020, at The Oaks Assisted Living in Leesburg. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Friday, January 10, 2020, in the chapel of Joseph W. Jones Funeral Home with Rev. Chris Pollock and Rev. James Howell officiating. He will be laid to rest at Andersonville National Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday evening, January 9th, from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. The family requests that instead of wearing black, all guests wear patriotic colors to honor the life of Mr. Daniels. Born March 24, 1924, in Colquitt, Mr. Daniels was the son of the late Charles Harvey Daniels and Mary Marvin Wade Daniels. At the young age of 18, Mr. Daniels was drafted into the United States Army in February of 1943, during World War II. He completed infantry training in Ft. Walters, Texas, and was then sent to the Company E-141st Infantry Regiment 36th division in North Africa where he was involved in combat. In December of 1943, he was wounded and returned to combat duty in time to be the sixth man on Silino Beach Head on the Rapido River in the Italian Campaign. On January 14, 1944, he was captured by the Germans and interned in Stalog 17B, 2B, 3B, 4B, and Stalog Luft #1. During his internment he worked as a medical technician. In May of 1945, he was liberated by the Russian Army and flown by the US Air Force to Camp Lucky Strike in France. He was discharged at Camp Sibert, Alabama on November 8, 1945. After being a prisoner of war, he decided to re-enlist in 1947 at Fort Benning and was able to complete his high school education and received his high school diploma. He was then sent to North Korea amidst the Korean War with Company E-19th Infantry Regiment 24th Division. He was wounded in combat for the second time on January 14, 1951 and was sent to Fort Campbell, Kentucky where he spent 9 months recovering in the hospital. He was discharged for the second time in September of 1951 after honorably and valiantly serving our country. He later went to work for the United States Post Office as a supervisor for the main branch in Albany and retired after 33 years between the military and postal service. He loved going to church and was a founding member of Faith Temple of Albany that later became First Assembly of God. He was a current member of Freedom Church of Albany and a lifetime deacon. In his free time, he enjoyed gardening and wood working and when he was able, he would travel with his church on mission trips to build churches. Mr. Daniels and his wife enjoyed traveling in their RV and were members of the Good Sam’s Club an RV camping club. Through all of his accomplishments, his greatest of all was his family. A loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Mr. Daniels will be greatly missed by all. Those left to cherish his memory include his beloved wife of 74 years, Lucille Bryan Daniels of Albany; children, Janice Boyer of Leesburg, and Gail Williams and her husband Gary of Albany; four grandchildren, Rusty Lane and his wife Wendy, Chris Boyer, Andrea Pollock and her husband Rev. Chris Pollock, and Natalie Sivo; six great-grandchildren, Amber Lane, Kristen Johnson and her husband JD, Madison Boyer, Lauren Pollock, Breanna Pollock, and Jalynn Sivo. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, PO Box 14301 Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.
