Herschel Joseph "Joe" Thomas

Mr. Herschel Joseph “Joe” Thomas, 80, of Leesburg, went home to be with Jesus on Saturday, July 10, 2021. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., on Tuesday, July 13, 2021, in the chapel of Joseph W. Jones Funeral Home in Leesburg. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Ben Steffens and Rev. Craig Howell officiating. Following the funeral Mr. Thomas will be laid to rest in Floral Memory Gardens in Albany. Born March 1, 1941, in Sullivan, Indiana, Joe was the son of the late William LeRoy Thomas and Lois Thompson Thomas. He served our country in The United States Air Force and served with The Albany Fire Department for 25 years. He was a faithful member of The Church At The Groves in Leesburg where he served in several ministries of the church. These included Sunday School and “The Holy Rollers” which is known as the group of men who kept the grass cut at the church. He was a talented cabinet maker and wood craftsman who shared his talents even in the sanctuary of the church he loved. He loved antique cars and had three that he proudly restored and cherished. More than anything Joe loved God and his family. A loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather he will be greatly missed until we meet again in Heaven. In addition to his parents, Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by his sisters, Gail Matthews and Judy Zeigler. Those left to cherish his memory include his beloved wife of 55 years, Jane Dupree Thomas of Leesburg; children, Wendy Friar and Chad of Leesburg, and Joey Thomas and Melissa of Newnan; grandchildren, Justin and Alexia, Ashton, and Sydney Friar and great-grandson, Jayce Thomas Friar.
