Helen Turvin Camp

November 27, 1932 — July 5, 2023

Ms. Helen Turvin Camp, 90, of Leesburg, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, at her home while surrounded by her beloved family.

Services honoring her life will be conducted at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, July 8, 2023, in the chapel of Joseph W. Jones Funeral Home. The family will visit with friends following the service at the funeral home.

Helen was born in Elba Alabama on November 27,1932. Her parents Jesse and Annie Turvin moved the family to Iron City, Georgia where her father worked as Section Foreman on the railroad. Helen graduated from Seminole County High School.

She married and had two daughters, Debbie, and Terri. She worked in various Civil Service positions as the family traveled to numerous Air Force Bases and retired after 34 years from Civil Service.

A friend said that if you look up Caregiver in the dictionary you would see Helen’s name. After her retirement, she took care of her father who developed Alzheimer’s for three years until his passing. When her brother-in-law was placed in Hospice her sister and he came to stay with Helen. After her father’s passing, she continued to serve others by volunteering in Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital’s gift shop for 14 years. She was known as the “change lady.” She would always go to the bank and get the necessary change to be sure the gift shop had what was needed.

She helped raise many of her family’s children. Her granddaughter, Lisa, and her daughter, Terri, lived with Helen for several years. When Lisa had her own daughter, Kady, Helen took care of Kady the first year so Lisa could return to work and was always available to Kady as she grew. When her niece, Wanda, needed after-school help for her son, John, Helen would pick him up from school and take care of him until Wanda and her husband got off work.

Helen had a love for gardening, and she always had a beautiful yard with many trees and flowers. She also enjoyed sitting on her back porch feeding and watching the birds, and squirrels.

The girls had pets growing up, but Helen had one special dog that was just hers. Blue was a dachshund pup from a litter that Lisa’s dog had. He got his name from the fact that he had one blue eye.

She was affectionately known as Nanaw to Lisa’s friends and enjoyed spending time with them as they grew. A loving mother and grandmother, she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters, Deborah Martin and Paul of Leesburg; and Terri Wallace and John of Leesburg; granddaughter, Lisa Harrell and Jay of Warwick; great-granddaughter, Kady; and bonus great-grandchildren, Kristen, Anna, and Bryan.

Condolences and memories may be shared on the website of Joseph W. Jones Funeral Home at www.josephwjones.com.
