Dr. Joseph Hartwell Marshall, III, of Leesburg, passed away on Saturday, March 11, 2023, at his residence. He was 86 years old and the eldest of five sons born to J H Marshall, Jr. and Katherine Allen Marshall. He grew up on a dairy and egg farm in Evans, Columbia County, Georgia where he was active in the 4H Club.


A celebration of life service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, in the chapel of Joseph W. Jones Funeral Home with Rev. Matt Harrell officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.


After graduating from Richmond Academy, he graduated from the University of Georgia and received M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from Cornell University, Ithica, New York. His field was economic analysis, or management economics as it was called then. During his academic years he was a member of Alpha Zeta, Aghon, Sphinx, Demosthenian Literary Society, Blue Key, Omicron Delta Kappa, Gamma Alpha, Phi Kappa Phi, and other academic and service societies.


While at Cornell he met and married Mamie Fehnel, a graduate school classmate from Nazareth, PA with whom he had two daughters, Susan and Jane. Upon her early death he later married Jan Hamilton Thompson of Albany, GA and upon her death, he married Grier Smith Allen of Leesburg, GA.


Dr. Marshall worked his way through Cornell as a graduate teaching and research assistant. His first position after Cornell, in 1963, was with a Fortune 500 company where he rose to Corporate Vice President before founding his own company in 1979 providing consulting, investment, and management services for foreign investors in American farmland. After that demand subsided during the 1980's the company focused on serving domestic and foreign lenders to farmland in the southeastern US in the management and disposition of farmland and agribusiness assets.


During his professional career he traveled to many foreign countries providing economic and management analysis services to domestic and foreign clients, government and private. His travel included much of Asia, Latin America and the former Soviet Union. He was a former President of the American Society of Agricultural Consultants and member of other professional groups including the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers. He also held a real estate brokers license and appraisers license for many years.


Anticipating retirement and post-retirement he acquired several irrigated farms in southwest Georgia where he has devoted his time and interest since 2011. He is a former member of Cherokee Town and Country Club of Atlanta, Doublegate Country Club of Albany, and remains a member of the Highlands Country Club of Highland, NC.


Dr. Marshall is survived by his wife, Grier Smith Marshall of Leesburg; daughters, Susan and husband Don Lawrence of Augusta, and Jane Marshall and husband Mike Layton of Gaithersburg, MD; grandchildren, Joey Lawrence and Christie Lawrence; and two brothers, Daniel and Rusty Marshall of Evans.


In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the Prostate Cancer Foundation at www.pcf.org or to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation at www.bcrf.org in memory of Dr. Marshall.
