Bobby F. “Bob” Wilson

Mr. Bobby F. “Bob” Wilson, 89, of Leesburg, passed away on the evening of Friday, February 2, 2024.


A celebration of life service with military honors will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 5, 2024, in the chapel of Joseph W. Jones Funeral Home with Dr. Joshua Posey and Mrs. Joy Breeden officiating. The family will visit with friends following the service.


Born on May 26, 1934, in Shreve, OH, Bob was the son of the late Rev. Doliver Wilson and Lena Wilson. He grew up in Kenova, W.V. and moved to Lee County, GA around 1958 where he would spend his life raising his family and serving his community tirelessly. Mr. Wilson was known as a Godly man who loved God, his family, his country, and his community deeply. A true southern gentleman, he never met a stranger and was a friend to many. He proudly served our country in the United States Air Force where he served in the Korean Conflict. Children and their education was important to Mr. Wilson as he served on the Lee County School Board. He also served on the Leesburg City Council from 1974-2022, where he also served as Mayor Pro Tem. During his time with the city council, he played a significant role in moving Leesburg forward. Some of the key projects that he made a significant role in are: The building of the current City Hall and Police Department, Water & Waste Treatment Plant, Public Works Department, a new water tank, and raising of the existing tank. The rehabilitation of the Train Depot which houses the Chamber of Commerce, and the construction of the North Leesburg Bypass, which helped relieve traffic congestion and improve school bus safety in our downtown area. He participated in the city’s efforts to be designated as a Rural Zone Community, which helped give tax incentives to investors and property owners in Downtown Leesburg. He was part of Leesburg acquiring 11 acres of land from Norfolk Southern for beautification of Downtown Leesburg. Outside of Leesburg he served on the SWGA Planning & Development Council, SWGA Community Action Agency, and the Lee County Housing Authority. He was an honorary State Trooper, a Master Mason, and a Deacon of First Baptist Church of Leesburg. He was a Scout Leader and a member of The Lions Club. Mr. Wilson was the proud recipient of the 2022 Lee County Chamber Lifetime Achievement Award.


He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 69 years, Mary Bridges Wilson that passed away on September 29, 2023.


Those left to cherish his memory include his children, Bobby F. Wilson and Anna of Greensboro, Jimmy Wilson and Melonnie of Albany, and Julie Wilson Eddings and Bill of Thomasville; 5 grandchildren, Austin Wilson, Lexi Wilson, Megan Chandler and Thomas, Katie S. Haynes and Shannon, and Ronnie Stripling; and his great-grandchildren, Jackson Chandler, James Chandler, Hanna Jones, Tristan Cochran, and Tara and Tori Haynes.
